INSANE: Amazon cargo jet skids off runway stops feet from parked tesla cybercabs | Rare Historical Photos

An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 cargo jet overran a runway at Miami International Airport on September 6, broke through perimeter fencing, and hit vehicles on a nearby road, killing at least five people and injuring five more.

The aircraft, operated by cargo carrier 21 Air for Amazon, came to rest tipped forward in a parking area beyond the runway after plowing through fencing and cars. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are working to determine why the jet failed to stop.

What Happened In The Miami Amazon Cargo Crash

Early accounts from investigators and local officials say the Boeing 767-300 overran the runway shortly before 2 p.m. local time, went through perimeter fencing, and hit multiple vehicles on a public road and in an adjacent lot outside the airport boundary. Authorities reported that all those killed were in ground vehicles, not on the aircraft.

Fire crews reached the crash site quickly and put out a fire in the forward section of the jet. NTSB teams are documenting the wreckage, recovering flight recorders, and interviewing the flight crew.

Photos from the scene on USA Today show the damaged nose and forward fuselage beside a roadway with semitrucks, passenger vehicles, and rows of Tesla models, including Cybercab prototypes, parked just beyond the wreckage. The FAA confirmed the flight had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a cargo run operated on behalf of Amazon.

Where Tesla’s Cybercab Effort Stands Today

The Miami crash unfolded as Tesla pushes its Cybercab robotaxi program, and images from the site show multiple Tesla vehicles, including Cybercabs, staged in a lot near the overrun path. Investigators have not reported any damage to those vehicles.

Cybercab sightings and early public rides have appeared in and around Austin, where Tesla is testing a steering-wheel-free robotaxi alongside modified Model Y test vehicles. These runs are described as pilot programs rather than a fully approved nationwide robotaxi network.

Tesla still needs wider regulatory clearance for large-scale, fully driverless Cybercab service in the United States. Federal regulators recently granted Zoox an exemption from certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for its own steering-wheel-free robotaxi, highlighting that companies need special approvals for purpose-built vehicles that fall outside traditional car designs.

For Tesla, the close call is a reminder that its Cybercab program will live in the same traffic mix as semitrucks, airport shuttles, and private cars, not in a sealed-off test track. Any future safety case for driverless fleets will have to show how they handle rare, violent events that start outside the automotive world.
