REVEALED: Around 200 scottish independence supporters gather for dumfries town centre rally | Rare Historical Photos

More than 200 independence supporters from across the region gathered for a rally in Dumfries town centre on Wednesday night.

The event at the Midsteeple was one of 13 being staged simultaneously across Scotland in response to a key court ruling.

Supreme Court judges in London announced on the same day that Holyrood cannot lawfully hold a second independence referendum.

Dumfries and Galloway Pensioners for Indy organised the Midsteeple gathering which featured several speakers.

Co-organiser David Howdle, from Kirkton, insisted that the denial of a vote is “blatantly undemocratic”.

He said: “It is time for the people of Scotland to make their feelings known about such a flagrant breach of their right to self determination.

“The people of Scotland have consistently, over years, voted for pro-independence parties in both Westminster and Holyrood elections.

“The SNP has a huge mandate to deliver another referendum on independence.

“And the United Nations Charter, which the UK government has ratified, enshrines the right of nations to self-determination.”

Other rallies were held outside Holyrood and in European cities.
