To build on Judith Furner’s letter on the benefits of human interaction (11 October) and Emma Beddington’s article (Autumn is here, and I’ve got five micro-moments of joy to see us through, 12 October): before falling asleep each night, my mother used to think of (at least) three things that had made her smile or laugh that day. A strategy to get us through not only autumn, but life? She was always cheerful and lived till 96.

• For more than 50 years I have believed that I read this newspaper for the quality of journalism, the range of opinions and the breadth of topics covered. However, reading Peter Lloyd’s story (A moment that changed me: I learned to read and write – at 42, 14 October), my response was emotional – tears welling up. I was in awe of his achievement and wish him a long and happy life surrounded by books.
