Francesca Hicks was over 60 when she applied to be a flight attendant. The former business owner, 64, had enjoyed a long and storied career, doing everything from secretarial work to managing holiday properties to working in dementia care. But after moving back to London from Cornwall, she was frustrated by the lack of opportunities for women her age.
“I just wanted a new career, but I was having a real problem with ageism and sending in my CV and being dismissed because of the date of birth,” she says. “But I’m not a grey rinse old lady, I’m still young at heart.”
