Russell Martin has been backed to succeed at Leicester City by Ipswich boss Gary O'Neil.

The former Rangers head coach has faced a challenging 18 months after his departures from Southampton and Rangers, with his Leicester side recently suffering a League One defeat to Burton Albion.

However, O'Neil, Martin's former Norwich City teammate, believes the ex-Ibrox boss has the skills to bounce back. O'Neil said: "We played together, I know Russ, we have stayed in touch, and I have followed his coaching career.

"He has done unbelievably well and a fantastic job at Southampton. He will test us.

"I don’t know Russ’ situation, and I don’t know what has gone on really, but I know he is an intelligent guy and a good coach.

"I expect him to do a fantastic job at Leicester. I think it is a fantastic appointment from them."
