The upcoming "Fable" reboot will not be one of those open-world RPGs that take 80 hours to finish.
Playground Games says the main story should take roughly 15 to 20 hours to complete. Players who explore the world and take on side content can expect significantly more time with the game.
How Long Is the 'Fable' Reboot?
According to Kennedy, the game will offer around 15 to 20 hours of main quest content. Another 15 to 20 hours can come from side quests and open-world exploration. That puts the focus on quality rather than simply making the game as large as possible.
The details came from associate game directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler during a group Q&A attended by Polygon at Gamescom 2026.
The "Fable" reboot is expected to deliver a main campaign lasting approximately 15 to 20 hours. That would make it slightly longer than the main stories found in the previous Fable games.
The original "Fable," released in 2004, has a main story length of around 12.5 hours based on HowLongToBeat. Fable 2 averages about 13 hours, while Fable 3 takes roughly 13.5 hours.
If Playground Games reaches its projected 20-hour mark, the new entry could have the longest main campaign in the series.
'Fable' Takes a Different Approach to Open-World RPGs
The announced "Fable" game length may seem short compared with some modern RPGs.
According to IGN, several major open-world games can take 50 hours or more to complete their main stories. "Elden Ring" and "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" are examples of games built around much longer adventures.
"Fable" appears to be taking a different route.
Instead of filling the campaign with dozens of hours of content, Playground Games is creating a more manageable central story. Players can then decide how much additional time they want to spend exploring Albion.
This approach could make the main narrative easier to follow without removing the freedom expected from an open-world RPG.
Side Quests and Exploration Add More Hours
The main campaign is only part of what the new "Fable" has to offer.
Kennedy described the game's "life systems" as limitless. That suggests players will have plenty of reasons to remain in the world after completing the main storyline.
Littler also stressed that players can essentially continue playing for as long as they want.
Side quests and exploration could therefore play a major role in the overall Fable experience.
Players who focus only on the main quests may finish relatively quickly. Those who explore Albion, complete optional missions, and engage with its various systems should get considerably more playtime.
'Fable' Could Offer Around 30 to 40 Hours of Content
Based on the developers' estimates, the main story and side content could provide around 30 to 40 hours of questing and exploration. That does not necessarily represent the game's total playtime.
Players who want to experience everything may spend much longer in the world.
For comparison, completionists typically spend around 30 hours with the original "Fable." "Fable 2" and "Fable 3" can take roughly 50 hours for players pursuing more of their available content.
'Fable' Release Date
The new "Fable" is currently scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. It is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
