So the people of Piddington have spoken – an overwhelming majority want to leave the UK (English village votes to leave UK in protest over migrant housing plan, 16 September). They didn’t really consider the consequences, did they? We can say goodbye, but to protect our borders we would need to erect a solid barrier around the village. Obviously anyone who works in the UK outside Piddington’s borders would need a work visa now, and travel visas will be needed by people wanting to visit supermarkets – or relatives. I note that there’s a small river running through Piddington. Any attempt to leave on small boats should be dealt with like any other attempted illegal entry.
I’m not sure they really thought through the reality of leaving, preferring instead a mix of populist soundbites and protest votes. It’s going to go badly. Where have I heard this before?

• Lisa Nandy rightly pointed out that all communities should shoulder the burden of asylum seekers, not just those areas with cheap accommodation as was the policy under the Conservative government.
We are all susceptible to a bit of nimbyism, but this “vote” was based on ignorance of the facts and on prejudice whipped up by the rightwing media.

• I note with interest that Piddington has voted to leave the UK. But if they can have a vote, why can’t the rest of us get a say in this? If given the chance, I’d vote for the nimbys of Piddington to be expelled from the UK. It would be interesting to see how long they’d last without us.
