EXPLAINED: Giants exercise fifth year option on lt andrew thomas | Rare Historical Photos

As general manager Joe Schoen previously indicated they would, the New York Giants have exercised the fifth-year option for left tackle Andrew Thomas.

On the fifth-year option, Thomas will earn a salary of $14.175 million. Had he made the Pro Bowl in 2022, which was completely warranted, he would have earned $16.66 million. The snub cost him nearly $2.5 million.

In 2023, in the fourth year of his rookie contract, Thomas will earn a base salary of $5.021 million and carry a cap hit of $10.292 million.

After a rough rookie campaign in which many began throwing the word “bust” around, Thomas rebounded in 2021 and then had a career year in 2022, earning a Second-Team All-Pro nod. He is now among the best in football.

Even with Thomas’ fifth-year option being picked up, the Giants and Schoen intend to begin negotiations on a long-term contract in the near future.
