Global Power Synergy Plc (GPSC), the power generation arm of PTT Plc, is fast-tracking its expansion into energy solutions tailored to data centres, aiming to capture surging demand for clean electricity from multinational technology giants.
Sukittee Chairak, senior vice-president of corporate finance and investor relations, revealed the company's plans to tap into Thailand's energy transition and the influx of foreign investment in cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
GPSC is preparing investments in data centre-related businesses in both Thailand and India, with plans to supply up to 1,000 megawatts of clean power, potentially through joint ventures.
The government is drafting a pilot direct power purchase agreement (PPA) scheme, which would allow data centres to buy clean electricity directly from producers.
Peer-to-peer clean power trading has long been prohibited, but the new initiative could unlock 2,000MW of capacity, with regulators considering expansion to other sectors.
Initially planned for the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), the scheme is also expected to extend to other regions.
The Energy Regulatory Commission emphasised that expansion will depend on the availability of renewable energy generation and transmission infrastructure.
GPSC's first project under the scheme, which is expected to deliver at least 300MW, is due to be finalised this year, said Ms Sukittee.
The company is targeting a 15% share of Thailand's emerging data centre energy solutions market, while also expanding in India with an initial 30–50MW capacity, scaling up to 300MW within five years.
Beyond new ventures, GPSC is planning to repower existing facilities such as GSPP11 (120MW) and GIPP (677MW), whose contracts with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand are nearing expiration.
Looking ahead, the company expects strong electricity demand from industrial customers in the second half of 2026, supported by improvements at the Xayaburi power plant in Laos.
However, performance is projected to dip compared with last year.
GPSC has set an ambitious target to boost its total generation capacity from 7,421MW currently to 13,666MW by 2030, underscoring its commitment to clean energy and regional growth.
