I fear I’ve been taking breakfast far too seriously. Most mornings, I wake up, stare into the middle distance for approximately 45 seconds, then shuffle towards the kitchen like I’ve just been released from a Victorian workhouse. Where’s the whimsy? Where’s the magic? Where’s the tiny bit of joy that makes you think, heck yeah, it’s morning?
Thankfully, Macca’s and Birdie have decided brekkie deserves a little more fun. Birdie’s Brekkie Meal has landed for a limited time, bringing together some familiar Macca’s breakfast favourites with a few new additions, all wrapped up in some v cute diner-style packaging.
The meal lets you pick between a McMuffin® or Brekkie McWrap®, both served with Birdie’s Brekkie Signature Pink Sauce, a new savoury-sweet tomato mayo. There’s also a Hash Brown and Birdie’s Strawberry Shortcake Frappe with Biscuit Crumb, which feels like the sort of thing I should be drinking while wearing sunglasses and pretending I’m in a 2000s music video.
And because apparently I’ve decided to make my mornings more interesting, I’ve been experimenting with a few ways to bring a little more whimsy into my own morning routine.
First, I switched my alarm from the generic BEEP BEEP BEEP sound blast to the radio. It turns out being woken up by a song is a lot nicer than being aggressively notified that I am, in fact, still alive. There’s also something weirdly nostalgic about it — suddenly I’m waking up to the radio like it’s 2004 and my biggest problem is whether I’ll catch my favourite song before I leave for school.
I’ve also swapped my usual morning scroll for a nostalgic cartoon. Instead of immediately opening an app and seeing 47 things I don’t care about before I’ve even eaten, I’m sitting down with my breakfast and putting on an old favourite. Give me a McMuffin®, a Hash Brown and an old cartoon I haven’t watched since I was a kid and suddenly getting out of bed feels significantly more worthwhile.
Then there’s the small stuff. Using the mug I actually like. Putting on an outfit I’d normally save for “later”. Taking the scenic route to work for absolutely no reason. Basically, treating the first hour of the day like it’s allowed to contain something other than emails and the crushing knowledge that I have to be a functioning adult.
That’s probably why the whole Birdie thing has clicked for me. There’s something nostalgic about Macca’s breakfast that I can’t quite explain. Maybe it’s the Hash Brown, maybe it’s the pink sauce making an otherwise normal Tuesday feel slightly more exciting, or maybe it’s the retro packaging that looks like something pulled straight out of the good old days.
The Birdie’s Brekkie Meal won’t be around forever, so if you want to get your hands on one, you’ll want to make the most of it while it’s here. I’ll be getting my fill before it disappears.
At this rate, I might actually start looking forward to my alarm going off. Stranger things have happened.
