EDINBURGH city centre streets were turned into "rivers" after intense flash flooding hit the capital.

Shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, heavy showers descended on the city.

Footage shared on social media shows cars attempting to drive through flooded streets and locals remarking on "rivers" forming.

One video, shared by Alan Nash (@keepedinburghthriving on Instagram), shows Victoria Street – a renowned tourist hotspot – closed off as a deluge of water plummeted down a staircase.

Another clip shows the staircase into Greyfriars Kirkyard flooding, with a "river" running down the steps.

Water can also be seen "overflowing" from the top of buildings on to the street below.

Nash said: "There's an actual river on Candlemaker Row.

"Look at this, Edinburgh is flooding. Greyfriars Kirkyard, look at the staircase. It's overflowing."

Meanwhile, one local joked that they "just went for a wee swim on south bridge", sharing a video of the busy street completely flooded as people attempted to wade through the water.

Social media users reacted with concern, with one person replying: "F***ing hell – I lived in Edinburgh from 1975-2021 and I have NEVER seen the South Bridge like that."

Another said: "Always wanted to visit Venice."

And another user quipped that they had just "drowned" on the Royal Mile.

The Met Office forecast predicted that the heavy rain would continue until around 6am on Thursday.

Climate change means there will be an increase in total rainfall and more intense downpours, bringing an increased risk of surface water flooding.
