REVEALED: Is oracle stock underperforming the s p 500 3vabcqz8 | Rare Historical Photos

Austin, Texas-based Oracle Corporation (ORCL) is a global technology company specializing in enterprise software, databases, and cloud computing. Valued at a market cap of $434.5 billion, Oracle has built its business around its widely used database technology, while increasingly shifting its focus toward cloud infrastructure and AI-powered enterprise applications.

Companies with a market capitalization of $200 billion or more are typically referred to as "mega-cap stocks." ORCL fits right into that category, with its market cap exceeding this threshold, reflecting its substantial size and influence in the software infrastructure industry.

However, the stock currently trades 56.4% below its 52-week high of $345.72 recorded on Sep. 10, 2025. ORCL has declined 26% over the past three months, notably outperforming the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which has rallied 2%.

The stock fell 37.2% over the past 52 weeks and 22.6% on a YTD basis, underperforming the index’s 18.6% rise and 12.7% rally over the same time frames.

ORCL has been trading below its 200-day moving average since mid-June and has recently climbed above its 50-day moving average.

Oracle has underperformed the broader market over the past year largely because investors have become increasingly concerned that the enormous cost of its AI infrastructure expansion could outweigh the near-term benefits of its strong cloud growth. Oracle raised $43 billion of debt in FY2026 and expects to raise roughly another $40 billion in FY2027, including a planned $20 billion equity issuance, to finance its AI data-center buildout. This has raised concerns about higher leverage, potential shareholder dilution and weaker free cash flow,

Compared with its rival, Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) has grown 17.8% over the past year and 4.8% in 2026, outperforming ORCL.

Wall Street continues to favor the stock highly. Among the 44 analysts tracking ORCL, the overall consensus stands at a “Strong Buy.” Its mean price target of $251.50 suggests 66.7% upside potential from current price levels.
