Stellantis was early to the extended-range EV (EREV) bandwagon, announcing what was then known as the Ram 1500 Ramcharger back in 2023. Now Jeep and Ram's generator-powered EVs are arriving later than expected, according to a report from Automotive News.
The Jeep Wagoneer EREV is now due to start production in November, the outlet reported, citing a memo sent to suppliers. Previously, production was supposed to start in May, the memo said. Ram 1500 REV production is set for next April, a delay from mid-2026, Automotive News reported.
Stellantis told Automotive News that the two vehicles are still on track. "Both Jeep and Ram are on track as planned. Jeep for this year and Ram for 2027," a spokesperson told the outlet.
Two supplier executives working on the program told Automotive News that the vehicles were pushed to make sure the rollout of this new kind of powertrain—one that pairs an EV platform with a V6 generator—goes smoothly.
This isn’t the first set of delays for Stellantis’ large electrified models. In 2023, Ram unveiled both electric and EREV versions of the 1500 pickup. The goal was to launch the models by 2024. That hasn’t happened. The full EV version of the Ram 1500 was canceled last year, and the brand focused on its EREV models instead. The EREV pickup has faced numerous delays.
The Jeep Wagoneer EREV Hybrid and Ram 1500 REV will share a powertrain. The driving experience is expected to feel electrified, with a 400-volt battery and electric motors providing the propulsion for the vehicle. But there will be a V6 engine and a gas tank, which will turn a generator that provides electricity to turn the wheels. The gas engine isn’t connected directly to the wheels at all. The idea is to extend the driving range when the battery runs out of electricity, and help extend range while towing.
The concept is very popular in China, especially amongst large luxury SUVs. Some automakers have theorized that this could be a great way to get drivers to electrify and placate fears of range and charging anxiety. Ford’s F-150 Lightning is gone, but it will return as an EREV, which could be better suited to large truck drivers not convinced of full EV models. Scout is launching its Traveler and Terra models in EV and EREV form, but the EREV has made up the majority of its reservations.
