Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup, with Hugo Ekitike scoring the winning goal.
Ekitike was sent off after receiving two yellow cards: one for punching the ball away and another for removing his shirt during his goal celebration.
The dismissal means Ekitike will be suspended for Liverpool's upcoming Premier League match against Crystal Palace.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot criticised Ekitike's actions as "needless" and "stupid", while Ekitike later apologised on Instagram, stating emotion got the better of him.
Other notable events included Alexander Isak scoring Liverpool's first goal and 18-year-old debutant Giovanni Leoni being stretchered off with a serious knee injury.
