EXPLAINED: Manchester surgeon struck off for sewing wrong organs together - The Real Truth

  • Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, an NHS locum surgeon, has been struck off the medical register after carrying out a botched emergency bowel operation.
  • The procedure, performed at Royal Oldham Hospital in August 2020, meant the contents of the patient’s bowel left his stomach and were re-deposited back into his stomach through a circular “closed loop”.
  • The surgery was described as "not compatible with life" and left the patient in severe pain, requiring a second corrective surgery.
  • Dr Abdel Rahman, who did not attend the hearing, claimed that he was a "scapegoat" and the victim of a "witch hunt".
  • The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service also found that the surgeon breached a previous order restricting his work by securing a locum position in Ireland in 2022.
