Marcus Trescothick believes it is important for England’s Test team to keep a homegrown influence in their new coaching set-up, though his own future remains unclear.
Trescothick completed his interim stint in charge of the side by wrapping a 3-0 whitewash over Pakistan and will immediately join up with Brendon McCullum’s white-ball side for their forthcoming series against Sri Lanka on Sunday.
Incoming red-ball head coach Stephen Fleming is due to arrive in England in the coming days, leaving both squads in the hands of New Zealanders.
Fellow Kiwis Tim Southee and Jeetan Patel are also involved with the bowling group, Australian Marcus North is a recent arrival as national selector and his compatriot Mike Hussey was reportedly sounded out by Fleming as a possible Test batting mentor.
Trescothick has been the most senior English figure in the regime for the last four and a half years but is in the dark about how, or if, he will be involved in the next chapter.
“There’s another transition to happen with Stephen coming in to work with Joe Root and plan how they are going to move things forward,” he said.
“We’ll see how it pans out. Within the next couple of weeks we’ll probably know a little bit more. I’ve spoken with Rob Key (director of men’s cricket) a little bit over the last couple of weeks, had bits of discussions on what might happen. When Stephen is over, he and Rob and Brendon can really get together and thrash out how it’s going to look.
“I probably do (have a preference) but it’s probably best I don’t mention it at the moment because it may not be what happens. I love doing both formats. It’s been brilliant and a privilege.”
Trescothick is not the only English voice in contention for a role, with Sarah Taylor earning positive reviews for her work as a fielding consultant this summer and Michael Yardy temporarily promoted from his role with the under-19s in recent weeks.
And retaining a local influence is something Trescothick hopes for, regardless of his own status.
“Yeah, I’d like to think so. There’s nothing better than working for your own national country,” he said.
“Within the course of the coaching system you want someone within that who can highlight things that are important to England players, England teams, England series. They are different to other countries and unique in their own way.
“We want to try and promote our own from within and get them up to the top because there’s nothing better if you can get to that point. It’s not the be-all and end-all but if we can have representation in there the better it will be.”
