Mariska Hargitay revealed she considered leaving her role as Captain Olivia Benson on L aw & Order: Special Victims Unit after more than 25 years to pursue comedy and talk show opportunities.
The 62-year-old actor decided to remain on the show after finding ways to pursue other creative projects, including stage plays and films, during filming breaks.
Hargitay is set to become the first woman in 15 years to host the Emmy Awards when the ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on 14 September.
The franchise has experienced several recent cast shake-ups, including the killing off of long-time character Captain Donald Cragen.
The flagship Law & Order series will welcome James Badge Dale as a new senior detective for its 26th season following the departure of Reid Scott.
