One person was believed to be on their way to hospital, police said, after a car sheared through a power pole at at Lake Macquarie.
The crash downed wires and plunging hundreds of homes into a blackout on Sunday afternoon.
Officers were called to Violet Town Road at Tingira Heights about 2.20pm on August 30.
Police confirmed they found a late-model hatchback had crashed into a pole, smashing it apart and bringing down wires.
A police spokeswoman said officers were still on the scene about 4.20pm, with details emerging.
Initial reports indicated at least two people were in the car at the time of the crash, she said.
Ausgrid advised power had been cut to about 843 homes and businesses between Warners Bay Road at Mount Hutton to Croudace Bay Road at Tingira Heights, including parts of the Lake Macquarie Square shopping centre.
The utility said its crews were responding, and estimated the lines could be restored by 5.30pm. About 350 properties had power restored by 4.30pm.
Paramedics treated at least two people at the scene. Details on their conditions were not immediately available.
The police spokeswoman said all occupants were out of the car when officers arrived shortly after the first calls to Triple Zero raised the alarm.
