- A massive swarm of jellyfish clogged cooling pumps at Gravelines power station in northern France , leaving only one of its six nuclear reactors operating at full capacity.
- EDF said that an influx of “several tens of tons” of jellyfish forced three 900-megawatt reactors offline and halved the output of a fourth.
- EDF said in a statement: “This situation has no impact on the safety of the facilities, the safety of our personnel, or the environment.”
- Fishing vessels are now taking part in “preventive fishing operations”, including catching the jellyfish with trawlers and releasing them offshore.
- The facility suffered an almost identical disruption last year, as experts warn that rising sea temperatures are creating favourable conditions for jellyfish making swarms along the coast increasingly common.
