A Mexican journalist known for his outspoken criticism of local authorities was shot and killed Wednesday in the southern state of Oaxaca, becoming the latest victim in a wave of deadly attacks that has intensified concerns about press freedom in one of the world's most dangerous countries for reporters.
State prosecutors identified the victim as Alejandro Leyva, a veteran journalist and political commentator who was fatally shot while eating at a roadside food stand in San Pablo Etla, just outside Oaxaca City. Authorities said an investigation is underway, though no suspects have been publicly identified.
