A major change is coming to Minecraft's virtual currency on October 27, 2026, and players who regularly switch between Nintendo hardware and other devices should pay attention before it arrives.
Mojang says Minecoins purchased through Minecraft on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 after October 27 will be usable only on Nintendo systems. Minecoins purchased on other devices will likewise stop being available for Marketplace purchases on Nintendo hardware.

The easiest way to understand the change is to separate old Minecoins from new ones:
- Minecoins owned before October 27 move into a Legacy Wallet.
- That Legacy Wallet balance continues working across compatible platforms.
- Minecoins purchased on Nintendo after the change enter a Nintendo-specific wallet.
- Minecoins purchased elsewhere after the change cannot be spent through Minecraft Marketplace on Nintendo hardware.
Mojang says Legacy Wallet Minecoins do not expire and will be spent before newer platform-specific Minecoins.
For someone who plays Minecraft entirely on Switch, that distinction may barely matter.
The player most affected is the person whose Minecraft account moves between devices.
Imagine buying Minecoins while playing on Windows and then opening Minecraft later on a Switch 2. Today, cross-device access makes the currency feel attached primarily to the player's Minecraft account. After October 27, newly purchased currency will have a stronger connection to where it was bought.
That makes the date worth remembering even for players who do not intend to immediately purchase anything.
Before October 27, players should check their current balance and understand that those existing Minecoins will become Legacy Wallet funds. There is no need to panic-spend them because Mojang explicitly says they do not expire. The useful action is simply knowing which balance is protected under the older cross-platform behavior.
Retail Minecoin cards are changing too.
Mojang warns that newer retail cards may not support Nintendo devices and tells buyers to check the platforms listed on the packaging before purchasing or redeeming a card.
That detail could easily cause more confusion than the digital-wallet change itself. A Minecoin card hanging beside another card in a store may look identical to somebody buying a gift, while its platform compatibility can now matter.
Mojang's announcement explains what is happening, but it does not provide a detailed business breakdown of why Nintendo Minecoins are being separated.
The broader context is that virtual currencies exist inside platform storefronts that handle their own transactions. Keeping currency portable between systems is convenient for players, but the purchase itself still passes through a particular platform's commerce infrastructure.
It would go beyond Mojang's announcement to claim that any specific revenue-sharing dispute caused the October change. What can be said is that Minecraft's currency will become less universally portable across the devices where the game itself remains available.
That is a noticeable shift for a title that otherwise emphasizes playing across hardware.
Mojang's official Realms page, for example, describes cross-device play as one of the service's core features, although Java and Bedrock remain separate ecosystems.
Nothing in the Minecoin announcement suggests Minecraft itself is losing its broader cross-platform strategy. The change is narrower than that.
But for the player who has treated a Minecoin balance as something that simply follows them from screen to screen, October 27 draws a new boundary.
The game can still travel.
Newly purchased currency will not always travel with it.
