It's officially fall, and there are 39 days until the November midterm election.
Connecticut is the only state with a statewide filing deadline in the next two weeks. Connecticut’s statewide write-in candidate filing deadline is Oct. 5.
Candidates must meet various state-specific filing requirements and deadlines to appear on primary and general election ballots. These regulations, known as ballot access laws, determine whether and how candidates can make it onto the ballot. These laws are set at the state level and apply to candidates running for state and federal offices.

Voter participation deadlines
Nine states and Guam have early voting periods that start in the next two weeks:
- Arizona : Early voting begins Oct. 7 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- California : Early voting begins Oct. 5 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Guam : Early voting begins Oct. 8 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Indiana : Early voting begins Oct. 6 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Maine : Early voting begins Oct. 4 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Montana : Early voting begins Oct. 5 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Nebraska : Early voting begins Oct. 5 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- New Mexico : Early voting begins Oct. 6 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Ohio : Early voting begins Oct. 6 for the Nov. 3 general election.
- Wyoming : Early voting begins Oct. 6 for the Nov. 3 general election.

21 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands have voter registration deadlines in the next two weeks:
- Alaska : Oct. 4 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Arizona : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Arkansas : Oct. 5 is the last day to register in person and by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Florida : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Georgia : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election and Dec. 1 general runoff.
- Illinois : Oct. 6 is the last day to register by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Indiana : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Kentucky : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Louisiana : Oct. 5 is the last day to register in person and by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Mississippi : Oct. 5 is the last day to register in person and by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Missouri : Oct. 7 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Montana : Oct. 5 is the last day to register by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Nevada : Oct. 6 is the last day to register by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- New Mexico : Oct. 6 is the last day to register by mail and online to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- North Carolina : Oct. 9 is the last day to register by mail and online to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Ohio : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Oklahoma : Oct. 9 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Rhode Island : Oct. 4 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- South Carolina : Oct. 2 is the last day to register in person, Oct. 4 is the last day to register online, and Oct. 5 is the last day to register by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Tennessee : Oct. 5 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Texas : Oct. 5 is the last day to register in person and by mail to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.
- Virgin Islands : Oct. 4 is the last day to register in person and online to vote in the Nov. 3 general election and Nov. 17 general runoff.

One territory has an absentee/mail-in ballot request deadline in the next two weeks:
- Northern Mariana Islands : Oct. 9 is the last day to request an absentee/mail-in ballot by mail and online for the Nov. 3 general election.
