Plans for a major 4,000-home 'garden village' have been halted after a landowner unexpectedly pulled out of the agreement. The Bassetlaw Garden Village, a major new housing development near Retford, will no longer be going ahead after a key landowner decided against the idea just days before the submission date of March 11.
Without the landowner on board, the garden village cannot move forward and a reworked local plan that completely omits the garden village will now instead be submitted to the independent planning inspectorate in June, Lincolnshire Live reports. The Bassetlaw Local Plan, which outlines the district council's plans for housing until 2038, will now have to be 'rethought,' the council says.
The new six-week consultation period will begin towards the end of April. As the garden village was expected to be self-sustaining, meaning the employment numbers were balanced against the housing numbers, the removal of the garden village will not mean an increase in housing numbers elsewhere in Bassetlaw, the council said.
