INSANE: Playstations founder handoffs are piling up and every replacement came from inside | Vintage Vibes

PlayStation Studios has seen three founder-era leaders hand off day-to-day control in the space of 17 months, and the succession choices tell a more useful story than the departure count alone.

Insomniac's Ted Price, Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming and Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen all passed leadership to people who were already inside their organizations.

Sony's own posts confirm the Insomniac succession and Sucker Punch handoff, while Kuittinen's Aug. 31 farewell said Sami "Haxu" Hakala had already moved from deputy managing director into Housemarque's top management role.

Player. One first examined those three transitions in Three PlayStation Studio Co-Founders Handed Off Leadership In 17 Months.

Putting them beside Sony Interactive Entertainment's corporate changes makes the larger pattern easier to see.

Measured by effective dates, Price's retirement at the end of March 2025 and Kuittinen's final day on Aug. 31, 2026 are roughly 17 months apart.

June 2024: Sony Splits SIE Leadership In Two

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on May 13, 2024 that Hideaki Nishino would become CEO of the Platform Business Group and Hermen Hulst CEO of the Studio Business Group, effective June 1.

Hiroki Totoki, who had been serving as interim SIE CEO after Jim Ryan's departure, became chairman of SIE while remaining President, COO and CFO of Sony Group at the time. Nishino and Hulst both reported to him.

The responsibilities were deliberately divided.

Nishino took responsibility for technology, products, services, platform experience, third-party publisher and developer relations, and commercial operations.

Hulst took responsibility for first-party development, publishing and the business operations of SIE's first-party content.

That two-CEO structure did not remain intact for a full year.

April 2025: Nishino Becomes SIE President And CEO

In January 2025, Sony announced that Nishino would become President and CEO of SIE effective April 1.

Hulst remained CEO of the Studio Business Group but began reporting to Nishino.

Totoki stepped down as SIE chairman as he moved into the President and CEO role at Sony Group Corporation. Lin Tao also left her SIE finance and strategy position to become Sony Group CFO.

That gave SIE a single company-wide chief executive while keeping Hulst in charge of the studio business.

The studio-level handoffs that followed were different in scale and circumstance, but they repeatedly used internal succession.

March 2025: Insomniac's Ted Price Retires

Price announced his retirement on Jan. 22, 2025 after more than 30 years leading Insomniac.

In his statement published by Sony, Price said he had made the decision the previous year and worked with Insomniac's senior leadership team on a succession plan.

Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider and Jen Huang were named the studio's new co-studio heads.

Price explicitly argued that Insomniac needed leaders who already understood its culture and processes.

Dezern, Schneider and Huang were not outside executives brought in to replace the founder. All three had already played major roles inside the studio.

January 2026: Sucker Punch Uses The Same Model

Sony announced on Dec. 16, 2025 that Jason Connell and Adrian Bentley would become Sucker Punch studio heads starting Jan. 1, 2026.

Connell had served as co-creative director on the Ghost franchise.

Bentley was the studio's technical director, leading engineering and production.

Sony also said Nate Fox would remain co-creative director.

Again, the successors were established Sucker Punch leaders rather than executives transferred in from elsewhere in Sony.

August 2026: Housemarque Completes A Third Internal Handoff

Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen said Aug. 31 marked his final day at the studio after 31 years at Housemarque and 33 years in the games industry.

Kuittinen's farewell said former deputy managing director Sami "Haxu" Hakala had taken over as managing director on July 1, with Kuittinen remaining through the end of August to support the transition.

The internal handoff is also consistent with the autonomy Sony described when it acquired Housemarque in 2021.

Sony's acquisition announcement said Housemarque's day-to-day operations would continue to be run by its existing management team in conjunction with PlayStation Studios External Development.

The Pattern Is Where The Replacements Came From

Three founder-era handoffs in 17 months can sound like turmoil if the departures are viewed alone.

The succession choices complicate that reading.

Insomniac selected Dezern, Schneider and Huang. Sucker Punch selected Connell and Bentley. Housemarque elevated Hakala from deputy managing director.

Those are continuity choices.

That does not prove the studios will remain unchanged, and it does not establish one common reason for three different people deciding to step back.

An internally promoted leader can still reorganize teams, change priorities or approve different projects.

What the public record does show is narrower: in each of these three founder-era transitions, the replacement leadership came from inside the studio rather than from a new outside executive installed by Sony.

That makes the timeline worth maintaining.

The next change should be added with its announcement date, effective date, predecessor, successor and whether the new leader was promoted internally.

If the pattern changes, the tracker will show exactly when it did.
