FORGOTTEN HISTORY: Polestars new concept hints at whats coming to its next two evs - The Untold Story

  • Formula 2030 previews Polestar’s evolving design language, retaining familiar cues like its Dual Blade headlights.
  • Its design cues will appear on the next Polestar 2, due in 2027, and the forthcoming Polestar 7.
  • Polestar faces heavy losses and a U.S. sales ban covering model-year 2027 and newer vehicles.

Polestar design is changing, but it’s a classic case of evolution rather than revolution. The manufacturer teased the Formula 2030 concept to showcase its new design direction, but despite the name, its influence will appear much sooner, starting with the new Polestar 2 debuting early next year.

It will also influence the look of the new Polestar 2’s crossover cousin, the Polestar 7, which arrives in 2028. They won’t look exactly like the concept, but it gives us a good idea where the brand is headed next.

The brand’s design boss Philipp Römers says Polestar didn’t want to stray too far from its established visual identity. Familiar touches like the Dual Blade headlights will stay, alongside updated styling, a fresh interior and a focus on more sustainable materials.

The Formula 2030 concept appears to be a low-slung sedan with a more planted stance than any previous Polestar. Its front design accentuates the vehicle’s width, making it look even more aggressive than the Polestar 5, which is currently the brand’s sportiest offering and its halo model. Looks like Polestar wasn’t kidding when announcing it had set its sights on BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.

For now, all we get is a dark teaser showing the front fascia of the upcoming concept; no side or rear views. It will be fully revealed later this year during the media drive for the recently revealed Polestar 4 SUV, a more practical wagon-like variant of the 4 fastback already on sale.

Polestar needs the new 2 to land with buyers and build on its predecessor’s popularity in an increasingly crowded EV market. It will be a sedan, like the car it replaces, with big shoes to fill as a successor to the company’s best-selling model with over 190,000 units sold, according to the manufacturer.

However, in a market increasingly dominated by high-riding crossovers, the Polestar 7 could end up being the bigger seller.

Even though it started 2026 with its best first quarter ever, the company's shares dropped nearly 30% after it announced its first-half 2026 results. Vehicle sales were up 0.4% year over year, but revenue fell 4.4%, and it posted a net H1 loss of $842 million, even after reducing operational losses by 43%. This led it to cut its full-year growth outlook from low double digits to low- to mid-single digits.

It also lost access to the American market. Polestar says U.S. authorities denied it authorization to sell model-year 2027 and newer vehicles under the Connected Vehicle Rule. It can still sell earlier model-year inventory, but once that is depleted, it expects to stop new-car sales in the country.
