POLICE have issued a statement following recent online speculation about a teenager almost two years on from his disappearance.

Aleksandr Benga was last seen around 8.45am on Monday, November 18, 2024 near to the water wheel within the Lewis Castle grounds.

Specialist search officers from Aberdeen and Inverness had travelled to the island to assist with the searches and partner agencies provided support.

Police concluded physical searches in December but urged anyone with information or dash-cam footage to come forward.

Aleksandr, who would now be 18 years old, has now been the subject of recent online speculation, with users questioning what may have happened to him.

However, Police Scotland have asked the public to stop sharing rumours online and instead contact the force with information.

Chief Inspector Ross McCartney said: “I would like to offer reassurance that all available lines of enquiry have been checked and any new, relevant information is assessed.

“I would ask people to avoid speculating online and instead please contact us.”

Inspector Neil Taylor said: “We are reappealing to anyone who is yet to speak to police or may have any information that could assist our enquiries to please come forward.

“This remains extremely upsetting for Aleksandr’s family and friends.

“His family has expressed their gratitude to everyone who has offered help and support and have requested their privacy be respected.

“We will continue to review all available information and act on any new information which comes to light.

“If someone has any information, no matter how small it may seem, please contact us.”

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101, quoting incident number 0803 of November 18 2024.
