The Chicago Bulls got a great chance to look at some of their young talent during Summer League, but Javon Freeman-Liberty was by far the best player on the squad. The 23-year-old point guard dominated the offensive end and played hard on defense, earning All-Summer League Second Team honors for his efforts.
At the conclusion of Summer League, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Freeman-Liberty’s future with the Bulls. Ultimately, Chicago filled their two-way spots and re-signed Ayo Dosunmu, leaving little room for Freeman-Liberty to earn a role. In turn, he signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors.
Elias Schuster of Bleacher Nation wrote about Freeman-Liberty’s decision to join the Raptors in a recent article, and he said that it “scares” him, as Toronto has a history of great developmental projects.
“The fact the Toronto Raptors were the organization to take a chance on Freeman-Liberty scares the crap out of me,” Schuster wrote. “They have a keen eye for adding the kind of under-the-radar players that can quickly turn into impact guys. Not to mention, they’re just remarkably good at developing young talent. So, yeah, I’m now fully expecting for Freeman-Liberty to get an opportunity later this year in their short-handed backcourt and for Bulls fans to explode the moment he drops 20/5/5.”
With the likes of Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, Chris Boucher, and more all blossoming on the Raptors, there’s a chance that Freeman-Liberty is their next undrafted success story.
