A BEACH in East Lothian was sealed off after an unexploded artillery shell was discovered.
North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team were called out to a suspected artillery shell after an “eagle-eyed” person spotted the unexploded ordnance at Broadsands at around 9am on Monday.
The Coastguard attended the call-out and contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, which sent a team to the location where a 100-metre cordon was established.
The EOD then established that the item was a 20-pound artillery shell, which was then X-rayed and removed for safe disposal.
A spokesperson for North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team said: “As you will see from the first picture, the item could easily be mistaken for discarded rubbish, with the second image giving a clear indication of what it actually is.
“Thank you to the first informant for the notification.
“If you find an item you have concerns about on the coastline, don’t try exposing it by moving or digging, call 999 and ask for COASTGUARD.”
