A QUEER bookshop in Glasgow has had its windows smashed again just weeks after another attack vandalised the shop’s window display with the word “trans” in it.
Govanhill-based Category Is Books has faced “pretty bad” vandalism again this month after its shop window was smashed on Tuesday evening.
The shop, which opened in the city’s southside eight years ago, had raised more than £10,000 to help pay for roller shutters to guard the shop after the business owners said they had faced a growing pattern of “intimidation, spitting and aggression”.
The money was raised after a window, which featured the slogan “Trans Liberation Now”, was smashed, with the section of the display showing the word “trans” targeted.
Category Is Books owners had thanked people for their “generosity and solidarity” after they raised £10,000 within 12 hours following the first incident.
However, in an update on Wednesday the shop’s owners shared that the window had been shattered again and had to reopen the fundraiser to cover the damages.
They said in a statement on Instagram: “There was another window smash on the bookshop last night. It is pretty bad.
“We've taped it up and contacting insurance etc as before. Everyone is OK.
“Likely to re-open the crowdfunder tomorrow morning once we know what can actually be covered.
“Bring on the shutters! Being made as we speak.”
Since the fundraiser reopened, it has topped more than £15,400 as of Thursday afternoon.
Hundreds of people have flooded the store's comments on Instagram sharing their solidarity following the attacks.
Among those was Green MSP for Glasgow Southside Holly Bruce, who said: “Let me know if I can help with any advocacy. Sending you love and support.”
Meanwhile, the Glasgow-based charity Refuweegee added: “Ach FFS. So sorry pals. Love and solidarity always.”
Gutter Magazine also commented saying: “Really sorry to see this. Sending love and solidarity to you all.”
