The first large wave of September Social Security retirement payments lands Wednesday, September 9, for beneficiaries born on the 1st through the 10th of any month. The maximum monthly benefit for someone claiming at age 70 in 2026 is $5,181, according to the Social Security Administration.

That deposit is the money many retirees use for housing, health care, transportation, and food. Knowing the exact date lets households time bill payments, avoid overdrafts, and plan discretionary spending without guessing when the cash arrives. The check that arrives in September is the August benefit; September’s benefit is paid in October.

The payment schedule for regular retirement, survivor, and disability benefits is:

  • September 3: Beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security before May 1997, people who receive both Social Security and SSI, and certain other special groups
  • September 9: Birthdays 1st–10th
  • September 16: Birthdays 11th–20th
  • September 23: Birthdays 21st–31st

SSI recipients already received their September payment on Tuesday, September 1. September 1 fell on a weekday, so SSA did not move the SSI date.

Benefit size still hinges on three factors: the age you claim, your lifetime earnings record, and how many years you paid into the system. Claiming at 62 currently tops out at $2,969 a month. Claiming your benefit at full retirement age tops out at $4,152. Waiting until 70 can push the check as high as $5,181, according to the Social Security Administration.

The Social Security Trust Fund May Be Depleted in 2032

Social Security is funded by payroll taxes on workers and employers. In the 2026 Trustees Report, the retirement trust fund (OASI) is projected to be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032 without congressional action. At that point, incoming tax revenue would cover just 78 percent of scheduled benefits. Combined with the disability trust fund, reserves are projected to last until 2034, with about 83 percent of scheduled benefits payable.

Congress has recently made various attempts to head off the Social Security trust fund depletion. Republican Senator Bernie Moreno and Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren have proposed raising the payroll tax for some Americans. However, their efforts were criticized by prominent taxpayer advocacy organizations and do not appear to be gaining traction. While the White House and bipartisan groups of senators have expressed support for legislative changes to improve the program’s solvency, no current efforts have been brought up for a vote.
