RARE PHOTOS: Shooting reported at virginia elementary school | Rare Historical Photos

A shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, prompted an evacuation of the building and left one adult injured.

The August County Sheriff's Office said that the incident is "contained and secured at this time."

One adult was injured in the shooting, according to Robin Lawson, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, who spoke to ABC News.

A social media post from Waynesboro Public Schools said that police are maintaining a large presence around the school. The incident occurred just weeks after the school’s first day back following summer break.

Students have been taken to Westminster Presbyterian Church for reunification.

The sheriff's office said that the "children are safe" and asked for the public to avoid traveling to the school to ensure emergency vehicles and buses aren't blocked.

“For the safety of students, families, school personnel, and first responders, the public is asked to continue avoiding the immediate area until further notice,” the sheriff’s office said.

Governor Abigail Spanberger said she was aware of the shooting and is monitoring the incident.

"I am monitoring the emergency at Westwood Hills Elementary School this morning. My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school," she wrote in a post on X. "Thank you to the first responders who are assisting at the scene."

Jim Wood, a Waynesboro city council member whose district includes Westwood Hills Elementary School, told ABC News that the shooting was an isolated incident and that the shooter is no longer a threat to the public.

He reportedly declined to comment on the status of the shooter. Wood called it a “one-on-one incident,” and added that the victim has been taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to the outlet.
