The racecourse at Broadmeadow was awash with vibrant colour and style at the weekend for the city's Ladies Day meeting.
It proved the perfect day for it as fashioned turned toward light, bright and bold under a clear-sky weekend hinting at an imminent spring.
Saturday's meeting continued a bumper weekend of racing after the $300,000 Newcastle Gold Cup on Friday.
The back-to-back engagements delivered one of the biggest events on the region's racing calendar, with thousands expected to converge on the course for the fashions, horsesports and hospitality.
After Aethelwulf romped home to a fourth-straight win in a champagne performance on Friday, it was instead champagne and style in the trackside field on Saturday.
Racegoers were invited to bring their best trackside looks for the hotly contested best-dressed as judged by fashion stylist Kate Kohler.
Newcastle Jockey Club CEO Duane Dowell said the Carnival was an opportunity to showcase not only outstanding racing, but the atmosphere and sense of occasion that has made the event a fixture on Newcastle's social calendar.
"There's nothing quite like Spring Carnival in Newcastle. For two days the racecourse has this incredible energy, you've got exceptional racing, fantastic hospitality, fashion, entertainment and thousands of people coming together to enjoy it," he said.
"Gold Cup Day has enormous significance for our club and the racing industry, while Ladies Day brings a completely different energy on Saturday."
The afternoon roared into the evening with live entertainment taking the stage after the final race of the day.
On the track, jockey Rory Hutchings steered the Gold Coast-trained three-year-old gelding Gridlock to a win in the $60,000 Maiden Plate in race two, while Mikayla Weir galloped home with Oakfield Utah to claim the Ladies Day Cup 68 Handicap.
