- A dog was taken by a suspected saltwater crocodile in the Flinders River near Richmond, Queensland , an area hundreds of kilometres from the animal's usual habitat.
- The incident occurred on Monday night at the Bottom Crossing on the Flinders River, prompting local authorities to warn residents to stay away from the river.
- Richmond Shire Council CEO Peter Bennett told Yahoo News : “No one has spotted a saltwater crocodile around Richmond before, although we have had a couple of sharks and sawfish caught here before.”
- He added that a prolonged wet season, keeping the river running for over 20 weeks, could have carried the crocodile down from the Gulf of Carpentaria.
- Queensland 's Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation said saltwater crocodiles can travel hundreds of kilometres inland during wet weather events, and an investigation has been launched with warning signs to be installed.
