Tesla's own configurator called it 325 miles. The EPA just said otherwise. The federal agency has certified the Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive at figures that beat Tesla's initial estimate, and by a margin big enough to matter for anyone cross-shopping the automaker's six-seat SUV.
The Model Y L Premium AWD, which starts at $61,990, now carries an EPA rating of 332 miles on its standard 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels, 7 miles above Tesla's own pre-certification number. It is the longest-range Model Y Tesla sells in the US.
According to Tesla watcher @SawyerMerritt, the 20-inch Uberhelix wheel option tells the same story. Tesla had pegged that configuration at 320 miles. The EPA certified it at 328 miles, 8 miles higher than the automaker's own calculations and proof the gap was not a one-wheel fluke.
Part of the reason traces back to the car itself. The Model Y L uses a slightly larger battery and aero tweaks, including an integrated rear spoiler molded into the body shell rather than bolted on, to stretch its efficiency beyond the standard Model Y. So far, independent real-world testing for the US-spec Model Y L Premium AWD is still catching up to the paperwork.

Stretching a car's wheelbase usually costs range, not adds it. The Model Y L's third-row seating makes it longer than the standard Model Y, yet it now out-ranges that model on paper.
On 19-inch wheels, the standard Model Y Premium AWD's EPA-rated range sits at 327 miles, 5 miles behind the Model Y L's 332. Switch to 20-inch wheels and the difference widens considerably.
The standard Model Y Premium AWD drops to 303 miles on 20-inch wheels, a 24-mile fall from its 19-inch figure. The Model Y L barely flinches: it loses just 4 miles going from 332 to 328, a difference of a little over 1 percent of its total range.
That is the number worth remembering for anyone eyeing the bigger wheels. On the standard Model Y, 20-inch wheels are a real range trade-off. On the Model Y L, the penalty is small enough that style should not cost you a meaningful chunk of your commute or road-trip margin.
