FORGOTTEN HISTORY: Tipping point viewers in tears after contestant calls actor benedict cumberbunt - The Untold Story

Viewers of Tipping Point were "reduced to tears” after one contestant made a naming blunder. Bagging £950 in round-one Kathleen from Newcastle accidentally renamed a famous Sherlock actor.

As four contestants competed for the £10,000 jackpot Kathleen dropped a clanger. She was asked which actor’s fans are known as “Cumberbabes”.

Kathleen humorously replied: “Cumberbunt”, and struggled to remember the actor’s first name as host Ben Shephard winced. The contestant had clearly intended to say Benedict Cumberbatch.

Host Ben told Kathleen: “I’m afraid I can’t accept Cumberbunt either. Although I do quite like it.”

Viewers took to Twitter to revel in the hilarious moment. One Twitter user, @artbizness, wrote: “The woman on #TippingPoint just called Benedict Cumberbatch "Cumberbunt" which has just reduced me to tears.”

Another, @Boppity_Boo34, simply tweeted: “Cumberbunt”. They added a number of laughing emojis.

Despite the blunder, Kathleen did very well in round two, securing £1,100. Unfortunately, in round three she lost out on competing for the £10,000 prize to the other remaining contestant, Luke.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s fan base named themselves “Cumberb****es” after a Twitter account of the same name. However, in 2012 the Sherlock actor suggested that Cumberbabes was a more “feminist” option.

Benedict told The Mirror at the time: “I wish my 15-year-old self had known about my allure to the opposite sex. It's flattering, though I do worry about what it says for feminism, it's quite a perjorative term. Cumberbabes might be better."
