- Southampton 's head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged by the Football Association ( FA ) in connection with the 'Spygate' scandal, following an investigation launched by the FA on 21 May.
- The club was previously removed from the Championship play-offs by the EFL and docked four points for the upcoming season after admitting to spying on opponents. Eckert has now been charged with three breaches of Rule E3.1 in relation to “misconduct” between last December and May this year.
- Southampton confessed to observing training sessions of play-off rivals Middlesbrough , as well as Ipswich Town in April and Oxford United in December, with a young analyst caught videoing Middlesbrough's session.
- Eckert publicly admitted his responsibility for the scandal in an eight-minute video, apologising to supporters, players, and the involved clubs, while also noting that observing training sessions is common practice in other European football cultures.
- Despite the controversy, Southampton owner Dragan Solak confirmed that Tonda Eckert will not be sacked, attributing the actions to cultural differences in football practices in Italy and Germany where Eckert previously worked.
