On Wednesday morning, some 200 Alabama in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients, doctors and advocates descended on the Alabama statehouse. Wearing orange and pink shirts for infertility awareness, they carried a variety of handmade signs: “You can’t cuddle an embryo.” “I just want to be a mom.”

For these people and thousands of others in the state, the last two weeks have been tumultuous.
