• National Farmers' Union president Tom Bradshaw has warned that British farming has endured its most difficult summer in a generation, battered by extreme weather, escalating costs and widespread disease.
• A new study by the NFU revealed that the UK's self-sufficiency has dropped across 10 out of 11 primary commodities over the last 30 years.
• Mr Bradshaw called on the Government to underwrite "crisis loans" for struggling producers.
• Environment secretary Angela Eagle said that while farming was as integral to the UK’s national security as energy or defence, food supplies “has often been taken for granted over the years, because we’ve been so good at it”.
