Firefighters were battling a bushfire on the Central Coast on Saturday afternoon, as the State Emergency Service warned further potentially damaging winds were in the forecast.
Gusts of more than 100 kilometres per hour were recorded in parts of NSW on Saturday afternoon, triggering the emergency warning just before 6pm.
Winds were expected to ease late Saturday, the Bureau of Meteorology advised, though damaging winds may redevelop overnight and into Sunday morning in the state's south.
As Rural Fire Service crews remained on the scene of a bushfire burning near Calga on Saturday evening, Central Coast councillor thanked emergency services for their efforts.
"The Central Coast community is grateful for our emergency services, including the RFS for acting quickly this afternoon to help contain the blaze," Councillor Wright said.
"This bushfire demonstrates the need for everyone on the Central Coast to be bushfire ready as we head into summer."
Forecasters warned wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour could tear across the Hunter into the evening on September 5, with possible isolated showers and thunderstorms diminishing later in the night.
"Winds are expected to ease across much of the warning area during late this evening, though damaging winds may redevelop overnight in parts of the Snowy Mountains and South Coast Ranges and continue into Sunday morning," Forecasters for the Bureau said.
"Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Gosford, Scone, Mudgee, Cessnock and Maitland."
Temperatures reached 30 degrees in Newcastle just before 3pm, with the most severe gusts reaching about 59 kilometres per hour about 6pm, according to observation data recorded at Nobbys Beach.
A belt of patchy rain moving to the east was expected to bring possible showers about 10pm.
A shower or two on Monday through Thursday with tops of about 24 degrees.
