REVEALED: 31 drawings inspired by nick cave for this years inktober | Rare Historical Photos

Inktober is a drawing challenge – to draw every day of October, with ink, based on a pre-set list of prompts. In order to challenge myself even more, this year I made it all about the brilliant, multitalented legend, Nick Cave, whose career, spanning more than 4 decades, provided more than sufficient inspiration even connected to the most random prompts.

Day 1: “crystal”. Live at Crystal Ballroom, a legendary place in Melbourne, with Boys Next Door.

Day 2: “suit”. Always dashing.

Day 3: “vessel”. The Ship Song.

Day 4: “knot” (brow and tie)

Day 5: “raven”. A concert poster.

Day 6: “spirit” (Ghosts of the Civil Dead)

Day 7: “fan” (Aleksandar Hemon, one of my favorite authors, a fellow Nick Cave fan)

Day 8: “watch” (Nature Boy, my favorite song, starts with “I was just a boy when I set down to watch the news on TV, I saw some ordinary slaughter, I saw some routine atrocity…)

Day 9: “pressure” (this is a cat meme, but it is suitable)

Day 10: “pick” (Nick Cave’s portrait of Warren Ellis on a guitar pick)

Day 11: “sour” (expression)

Day 12: “stuck” (Nick Cave quote: “The society of whores stuck needles in an image of me”.)

Day 13: “roof” (metaphorical :))

Day 14: “tick” (confirmed)

Day 15: “helmet” (construction)

Day 16: “compass” (this one was super tough, though, but NC makes a reference to compass being an emblem for one of the nine muses, Urania, in his novel “The Sick Bag Song”)

Day 17: “collide” (lyrics to “Straight to you” include “and the chariots of angels are colliding…”)

Day 18: “Moon” (from “As I sat sadly by her side”)

Day 19: “loop” (timeloop, cover of “Stranger than Kindness”)

Day 20: “sprout” (with one of his sons)

Day 21: “fuzzy” (the moustache)

Day 22: “open” (sleeve for “Push the Sky Away”)

Day 23: “leak” (lyric from “From her to eternity”)

Day 24: “extinct” (I felt like including something a bit more personal in this series so here’s my special spiraling frame around this quote :))

Day 25: “splat” (shot dead in “Lawless”, his film from 2012)

Day 26: “connect” (with Blixa Bargeld)

Day 27: “spark” (lighting up with PJ Harvey)

Day 28: “crispy” (eating a Granny Smith apple).

Day 29: “patch” (by LeighLaLovesYou on Pinterest)

Day 30: “slither” (Where the Wild Roses Grow with Kylie Minogue)

Day 31: “risk” (giving the paparazzi a finger on the red right hand :))
