Fun side story. My name is frequently mispronounced by people in USA. So a colleague was in a joking mood, and said my name, trying to mispronounce it. However he said it correctly. I said, yes that is the correct way. So apparently he has been watching a show and one character was using this name for another character. He always thought the character was purposely mispronouncing the other characters name as a joke.

This is a photograph of Istvan taken in a portrait studio several weeks before the family were rounded up and taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was mürdered. His parents had converted to Protestantism years earlier, before Istvan was born. Both Istvan's parents survived and divorced after the war. Not necessarily - most states had some kind of Jim Crow laws at some point or another, whether they were 100% segregated, or had anti-miscegenation laws, or engaged in red-lining. In some states, it varied from town to town. For example, my home town never had segregation, but almost every town around us had a K*K chapter in the 1920s and unofficial segregation up through the 70s.

As a reminder, only states with Jim Crowe laws (southern states) outlawed black people using white pools in 1969. I don't want folks from other countries thinking this was happening everywhere in the US. My parents, growing up in the 1940s, shared classrooms, pools, churches, etc, with black neighbors and classmates. That was already normal in the states that had never been s***e states.
