Thank you, and no here's no way to tell, only to work out how dark a shade it is based on the shade of grey. It's a mixture of research from reference paintings and costume books, and artistic license. Tom

That was (and in parts of the UK) still is the case. I ran many hotels around the UK for a large UK based company years (think late '70's early to mid '80's) ago and in several of the more rural (market town) ones had rows of pewter tankards, usually hung above the bar which were many of the local men's personal tankards, many being passed down from father to so or even further back - that or presented on coming of age. As an experiment one week, myself and my assistant manager did a measuring of each of the 20 or so tankards we had in a place in deepest, darkest Suffolk and found that apart from 3, every one was between a quarter and a third over what was stamped on the measure (ie, if stamped 1 pint, it would be 1.25 or 1.33 pints) - they had been ripping the place off for years !!! We started a policy of only filling the known offenders tankards to 3/4's full, they soon got the message .......

Also, I've got a question. How do you know which colours to use? Is there some kind of way to guess the colour based on the shade of grey, or do you just do it based on what seems the best?

These pictures are beautiful, even more when colourized. I usually skip the text altogether on these kind of articles (my ADD doesn't let me concentrate on long paragraphs, anyway), but I read everything here. I'd love to see more of these!

The movie is incredible too, and unlike lots of recent war movies it doesn't rely on CGI - I think there are 2-3 CGI shots used and only for the safety of the horses. Really worth watching

My grandad served in WWI as a wagon driver taking supplies to the front. I hadn’t imagined that the routes they took were as bad as this. He was accidentally scalded by some soup and was sent to Scarborough to recover. I can see why such precautions were necessary when I see how filthy everything must have been. Thanks for posting these.

These were all gorgeously done. Thank you for also sharing the history of these brave animals. So many of these animals were life lines for the soldiers and also offered a sense of love and compassion amid so much violence, trauma, and death.

Thanks for your feedback. I hadn't stated these photos were art (I had put the piece in 'history' myself) and had no intention to offend but to highlight something that is sadly being forgotten as the survivors pass away each year. I appreciate not everybody likes colourised photos but disrespecting the subjects was far from my intention, Tom.
