“Can Turn Deadly Way Too Quickly”: 42 Seemingly Harmless Things That Can Be Incredibly Dangerous

No one forgets to remove them at the end of her period. It does happen but it is extremely rare. I'm a woman, and a R.N. and the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome is from leaving your tampons in too long DURING your period, using a higher absorbency tampon than you need (therefore leaving it in longer than you should), and from using tampons at all. TSS is very rare. It became well-known because around 1980 a new and really absorbent and effective tampon was introduced to the market. It was called Rely. (I was there.) They worked so well that women could leave them in longer, thus there was a sharply increased number of cases, some fatal, in the USA. The Rely brand of tampons were pulled from the market and many studies were done. It was determined that cases of TSS happened also with other brands of tampons, too. Thus the CDC requires all brands of tampons to contain a brightly-colored warning on the box insert (the folded sheet of paper which explains how to use them.) My TED talk 😘

Sorry you had this experience, as most Americans would give you the shirt off their backs if you needed it. It's true that in certain regions people are not known for their friendliness. Now the English...they are the ones I find distant and prickly. The Germans may seem cold but they're just hurrying to be on time...lol. Don't delay them with something so unimportant as a question, especially at a train station, because, duh.

Well explained. I'm American living in the Netherlands, and here you can get a to-go box at most places but not many native Dutch ask. In France, however, taking home food is unheard of. I about cried when I heard this, as I was preparing to ask...I was saved from embarrassment by a Dutch friend who has worked in France for 15 years. It broke my heart...I could have made TWO dinners from the amount of beef left. The dinner was advertised for two, but three of us ate and there was still probably a pound of beef remaining.

I think this may be very regional. Remember that in the US, each state is the size of many countries in europe. If you think of how different each country's culture is, it is generally the same for states as well. I am from the north-east of the US and here, our main thing is honesty, so rarely do people have fake relationships. It's very looked-down upon. We're also not "fake friendly" like the south. I lived in Kanses and Georgia for short times and it was hellish for me because the people acted very different from what I'm used to. I think they mean well but it seemed a bit fake. Like the way someone at a store check-out smiles.

(Keep getting errors while trying to post this, sorry if it posts more than once!) A thing many people traveling to the US for the first don't realize-- they don't expect you to eat the entire entrée by yourself, most people don't eat more than half. You just ask them for a "to go box" and bring the rest home. Usually eating out means having food for the next few days. I tend to only order a side (which is smaller than an appetizer) and only eat about half of that. Look at an American dictionary, it isn't just "states using the term wrong", that is just literally what the term means in the US. Entrée is the main course, and what most european countries refer to as an entrée, we call an appetizer. So if you've been ordering an entrée as an appetizer, that may be causing part of the confusion.
