I onced walked into a forest of webs in summer on a bushwalk (loads of spiders in summer in Australia, particularly in the bush) ducking and weaving and almost crawling sometimes while thinking it'd be only a couple metres, then every step that it'll probably thin out soon. Soon pausing every step to try and pick the best path, soon trying to calculate how far I'd come, trying to guess if it would be further to go back or forward. Must've walked more than 50 metres through that, come out onto someone's property. Can't cross because it's flooded, and a bull on the other side. Got chased by some kind of wasp or hornet. Got bitten by something painful on the neck. Didn't want to go back, so had to walk through the mud and water to get back towards a road. Never used that track again!

He may be trying to protect himself, but he is actually more likely to get himself sick by doing that. People touch so many things when they're out and about, and a lot of the time they don't even realize it. These surfaces they are touching are often covered in germs, and by covering his mouth and nose with his hand he transferring those germs directly into his body. i.e. germs are on surface of object. Man touches object. Germs transfer to hands. Man covers face with hand. Germs transfer to face, nose and mouth. Germs are now in and on his body. He will now get sick.
