Going against the flow, OP is the bigger AH. She didn’t strictly speaking hide stuff, what bit of “my dad owns several businesses” and her parents living in a gated community just out of Santa Rosa, CA, suggests anything other than a high(er) income bracket? So, BF is lashing out for feeling stupid, humiliated he didn’t connect the dots (bit of an AH). But she makes a huge deal out of how she’s going it alone, paying her own way, parents didn’t cover college, the 2nd hand car etc. Her description of where they live “yeah, they share a gate”, “median household income in that area is $65-75K”, which strongly implies intentional misrepresentation of her background on her part. I checked stats for Santa Rosa and environs for 2020 (yes, the data exists and is public). Median household income was over $78K. It’s extremely unlikely the median for the gated communities was lower, especially considering her parents’ home will have been comparable to those in the community. In other words, she cherry picked a statistic to support her story.

Yep... I was at a babysitter's for the weekend while my parents were out of town. My mother had never bothered having any kind of "talk" with me, and this was no exception. I couldn't understand what was happening, I thought I had soiled myself, and I was too embarrassed to say anything to the lady taking care of me. I locked myself in the bathroom for hours. Eventually, she came to find me and was annoyed at my hiding... until she realized what was going on. She took the time to explain, gave me a pad, showed me how to clean my underclothes.

As a kid, I couldn’t *wait* to get my period because the commercials said it’d make me a woman! It was April first when I began feeling sick and bleeding. I went to my mom, who was washing dishes, and tried to tell her I was bleeding and feeling sick. It took several tries; she finally said “I’m not falling for any more of your shenanigans!” Realizing she wasn’t gonna take this seriously, I began sobbing and I pull my panties away so she could see inside. She quickly wiped her hands in a towel and then grabbed my arm and steered me towards the bathroom. She showed me how to wear the awful elastic belt thingy, then I went to my room to read. A little while later, she came into my room, flung the pamphlet that comes with napkins on the bed, and sternly announced “This is NOT for discussion at the dinner table!” And that was my “special bonding moment.” 🙇🏻‍♀️ I sooo needed a great stepmother. I don't feel like blaming the boy. People who grew up in poor families are often wary of rich people, and for good reason. The two have been dating for six months; she should have mentioned her family's wealth earlier. Perhaps, in the months leading up to the meeting with her parents, she and her boyfriend discussed bills and tight budgets, and he thought they were on the same level. Then, he, who isn't used to a wealthy environment, finds himself catapulted into a wealthy home, with her parents even offering to help him: this can be experienced as humiliating. Furthermore, while it's admirable that the girl lives off her own earnings, it's clear that if she were in financial trouble, she wouldn't end up broke. In short, I see a certain hypocrisy on the girl's part, or a fear that a man might choose her for her family's money. Obviously, if the two love each other, they will overcome this inconvenience, but I fear that an imbalance due to their social difference will always remain.

That’s because you can’t fathom how effed up family and social values can be. My strongest, early childhood memory is Egg Donor slamming my 5-yr old head off a brick & plaster wall screaming, “maybe this will get it through your thick skull”, I wasn’t surprised or shocked by the treatment, so, obviously such abùse had happened in the past…and it continued into my teens. She was a lying, cheating, alcoholic; physically, mentally and emotionally abùsive POS, with either a tenuous grasp on reality or a pathological liar. At 15, she accused me of having an incestuous relationship with Dad. He was there, my younger siblings were there, but she vehemently denied ever having said anything of the sort, despite us ALL quoting verbatim what she screamed at me. She was equally abùsive to my siblings. I went NC at 28. You would be appalled at how many people: family (including one sibling), friends, work colleagues, insisted I was wrong. I only get one mother. I’d regret it if we didn’t reconcile before she dîed. I was exaggerating or misremembering events. She has a mental disorder, not her fault. There was so much pushback against my decision, there were times I questioned myself. What you also can’t seem to comprehend, is I loved her. I HAD to go NC to protect myself as what she kept doing hurt so, so, much. But making that choice was harder than you can possibly imagine. I literally grieved as if she had dīed. I’m actually glad you can’t “enjoy” a tale where 99.9% of people will agree with them “and then my family all said I was wrong.” It means you never lived through something like this. You can’t imagine how it could possibly be true or that OP could question their decision.

Appalling that, as a mother and woman, OP can’t seem to fathom what actually happened. Doesn’t she have the imagination to put herself in her son’s position? Tried to escape but been physically overpowered, held down helpless while her husband punished her? Would she have been terrified at how much further the punishment could go? It’s honestly horrifying that endometriosis is *still* mostly diagnosed through surgery. After 2 years of misdiagnosis for different types of cysts, I was referred to the same gynaecologist who performed my tubal ligation, to remove an ovary in imminent risk of torsion. She had to remove the ovary, the fallopian tube and “burn off” all the lesions she could find during the surgery. Still has a funny story though. I couldn’t pèe in the cup. Tried for well over an hour with the nurse telling me I couldn’t have surgery if I didn’t pèe. Eventually got annoyed enough to ask why they needed the pèe sample. “In case you’re pregnant”. I said, “tell DR so-and-so I said hi, she performed my tubal ligation, and that I trust her work.” Went into prep for surgery about 15 minutes later.

“Never” is a big word that doesn’t necessarily apply. It depends on whether you are completely aware of your role and if you have any interest in a romantic relationship for yourself. Must admit I didn’t see that twist in the tale. Which is odd considering I had an absolutely terrible relationship with one of my sisters. Actively disliked her and she, me. BTW people, don’t pat random kids on the head as though they’re some kind of pet, some of us despise it and you for treating us as if we have no personal agency or the right to reject physical contact. At the same time, the mother was telling me that the reason my sister hated me was because I was intelligent and talented (played 3 instruments) and, given the several years age gap, she was never going to catch up until she became an adult. Plus all she really had going for her was her looks. I’m very ashamed that I lapped that shıt up, but I was only 9-13 so gotta give some grace to the child who didn’t know she was being lied to. It wasn’t until sis was diagnosed severely dyslexic (and I grew up a lot more) that I realized she wasn’t at all stupid, but the relationship was already broken. It *still* took until our 40’s to have an actual conversation about what happened. Imagine two middle-aged women sobbing in each other’s arms having realized we could have had a loving relationship if it wasn’t for our egg donor deliberately sabotaging it.

One should not compare what one knows about areas that are easily accessible to areas that are not. They are not the same. I’m willing to accept a vague idea based on what we know.
