At my older brother's celebration of life, a story Water bugs and Dragonflies was read (we also read it to him when he was on palliative care). It uses the analogy of water bugs living below the water, until one day they walk up the stalk of a reed and past the surface of the water, never to return, but turn into dragonflies, to symbolise moving from life on earth to heaven. Since then, his symbol has been a dragonfly, so my mum got a tattoo of a dragonfly on her shoulder. In a similar vein, a butterfly changes from a caterpillar, so my youngest brother's symbol was a butterfly, so that is tattooed on her other shoulder.
