Hi Mylah Rose, Nail is colored. Look closer, and compare with black and white.

You don't. You just choose yourself mostly. I personally google clothing/items from the time period and use that as a reference. I also usually do skin tone last to make sure it doesn't get washed out by the other colors and look fake.
