I think some strong black accents would save it. For example if the mirror had a black frame instead of golden. Maybe replace one or two of the very ornamental stuff with a more modern, minimalist version, so maybe the rug or the ceiling light and the horrible fur blanket

Yes. These are Roborovski hamsters. They flatten out if they're too warm. Must be kind of hot in that enclosure and possibly in the building as well.
