Intelligence and education was always emphasized in my home growing up. I was also told I was pretty, but it wasn’t emphasized. Anyway, my self-image and self-esteem were based upon being smart and competent. I have friends that, although they are extremely intelligent, talented and capable, were raised by parents who focused a lot on their physical attributes. Getting older hit them a LOT harder because more of their identity was based on looks. After all, I may have grey hair and wrinkles but I’m still smart and competent.

Coyote melon. Cucurbita palmata, or Cucurbita californica. We have these locally, and they cover large areas of otherwise bare ground. They aren't edible and all the ones I've found have strong smelling foliage and fruit. Indigenous Americans in California used these to make soap.

OK these are all starting to make me mad. I would so dearly love to be on a jury and they never let me, but all these nut jobs fly past the voir dir? How is that fair?

The idea of being judged by your peers (as opposed to your "betters", I suppose) is very nice and looks prettily egalitarian - until you realise it means that your general uneducated and possibly unwilling laymen will get to decide about legalities that the educated spent years to study. The whole scenario seems to conjure up an entertainment set rather than an objective viewing of facts. The winner will be whoever impresses the jury most (i.e. the greatest showman), decided solely on personalities with little to no regard to actual evidence. To me that looks an even worse onset for a fair trial than being judged by professionals - they can be prejudiced and unfair, too, of course, but at least they actively chose and prepared for the situation (and it's their job), rather than be drafted for a pittance and be annoyed about it (or unable to attend for loss of income).

A place I rented with friends when I was 20 had a horrible shower that I wouldn't be surprised if mushrooms grew in. We cleaned it, but there were broken tiles and patches that were just concrete. Landlord did nothing much to fix it.
