I didn't know this was called bonus pay - it's referred to as a shift premium or incentive pay here. Extra pay for working specific (usually unwanted) shifts like Friday nights in retail or Christmas day, then you might quality for OT as well if it's a stat holiday. Where I live (not the US) it's fairly uncommon to have both because companies think OT is enough of an incentive.

Clearly neither you nor anyone you're close to has suffered anything that warrants needing trigger warnings. Good for you. Many people aren't that lucky. I'm glad people are starting to understand how important mental health is and are now working to help others stay away from things that would cause them to spiral. I'd like to point out the sentence where OP states that whilst his mother was breaking down talking about what she went through, he told his mother to shut up (something shes no doubt heard all her life by "family") because his wife's dress, that his mother was forced to pay for, made his wife a bit sad. That woman had been abûséd so badly. Those kids watched her be abûséd, they did nothing. Apart from occasionally joining in on her mocking, or ignoring it and letting it continue. Her own son is happy telling her to shut up, but not his own father when he's making his mother cry. That woman is one of the few that has a genuine right to walk away.

Are you my long lost sibling? I went NC with my alcoholic parent 20 years ago and to this day they send their flying monkeys to berate me for not forgiving them. The comment above not pressuring someone to accept an a****t's apology is spot on. It's part of 12 step programs (AA, NA) to accept that giving an apology doesn't guarantee forgiveness, but neither my parent or OP's stepdad gets it.

I remember when my father, some years into his recovery, said to me "I want to be the father I never was". I was in my 30s or so. Not a chance. And of course he relapsed, and he never really stopped being the arsehole he always had been, according to my siblings. He even wanted to leave my wedding early (while still sober) to drive his new wife (a nurse) home, who had to work a night shift that day. Arsehole.
